Love, Peace & Spades:
A Rather Fly Game Night
LA County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell is bringing two days of FREE World Cup watching, music, food, and community on July 4th and 5th—and we’ll be in the mix, too!
Experience Avalon Blvd. in a whole new way with live music, dancing, food, and our Pull-Up & Play, where we’re inviting all players to get hands-on time with Spades, Lotéria, Conquian, Bid Whist, and more.
We’ll also be available to teach you how to play via our expert coaches.
Both days are packed with performances and activations, including African Soul International’s drum-making workshops, the Divas of Compton, Los Licenciados, Angel City FC soccer skills activities, and giant soccer puppets by artist Beth Peterson.
Pull up, play a hand, make friends, and be part of the festivities!
A cultural experience dedicated to our most storied card games.
Spades Academy by Love, Peace & Spades at Our House brings together seasoned experts and coaches, curious first-timers, and players looking to rebuild their skills for our once-a-month gatherings filled with strategy, laughter, and connection.
From Bid Whist to Tunk/Tonk to Dominoes to Spades, these games have deep roots in our culture and have long been a key ingredient for fellowship and generational exchange.
What to expect when you attend: Play & Learn: Tables for both experienced card game players and those eager to learn the ropes. Culture & Community: A warm, inclusive “hush harbor that celebrates the heritage of our play traditions.
Wine & Food Vibes: South LA Wine Club’s curated wines will be available for pour, while Chef Binta’s WithBEE, Afro-Caribbean cuisine, will serve lite bites throughout the night.
Compton has always had cowboys. Now, it’s time to pull-up and play with them at the table with all our favorite #BlackFamilyHeirlooms.
We are joining our Color Compton and Compton Art & History Museum friends for a one-of-a-kind summer night, honoring the western and equestrian heritage of the Black American and Latino cowboy community.
With Spades, Bid Whist, Tunk, Dominoes, and our Spades Academy™ taking place at Martins Family Ranch, there will also be line dancing with JT & Shakeema Prescott, performances by El Compa Negro, and food made by City Grind BBQ and House of Wings.
Every ticket purchases will support Compton Museum’s future, aiding in directly expanding the first and only art and history museum in Compton into a bigger, bolder home for the community.
Pull up in your best western wear, bring your crew, and let’s build something together.
Love, Peace & Spades™ is a community of creatives, professionals, and grassroots organizers who curate free, donation-based game experiences to honor, celebrate, and cherish our Black family heirlooms (e.g. Uno, Bid Whist, Tunk (or Tonk), Dominoes, and, of course, Spades).
In addition to gameplay, we offer pop-up experiences, skills-based education, tech/VR integration, a comprehensive directory of Black-owned businesses, game developers, and makers, plus an annual Spades tournament and festival for enthusiastic players.

Love, Peace & Spades™ events and programming address social isolation and trauma commonly associated with past gaming experiences by reestablishing new and healthier relationships to gameplay through ‘Spades Academy,™ a curriculum-based activation for players to develop skills and strategies.
